CATARACT SURGERY

CATARACT SURGERY

Cataracts are one of the most common visual problems. It is observed mainly in older adults, with the progression of age the natural aging of the lens gradually develops and as a cataract develops, the lens becomes opaque and blocks the entry of light to the eye and thus not see clearly. However, not only older adults suffer from it, sometimes children are born with it. Cataract surgery will help stop this aging and regain sight and the procedure almost always includes the placement of an artificial lens or intraocular lens (IOL) in the eye.

How is Cataract Surgery?

This intervention consists of removing the aged lens and then replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

Cataract surgery is usually performed under topical anesthesia (applying numbing drops directly to the patient’s eye). It is a simple eye operation, which does not usually require more than 10 minutes of intervention. In general, recovery from surgery is fast, a good result is achieved in a few days, but these parameters can be variable depending on each specific case.

Before

Before surgery, the ophthalmologist will do a complete eye exam and eye tests using an ultrasound or laser scanning device to measure the eye. These studies will help to know which will be the best IOL for you, although most of the doctor tries to choose an IOL that allows him to see without glasses or contact lenses after surgery. It is recommended to ask your ophthalmologist which is the best for you.

After

Recovery takes about 2 weeks. If you need new glasses or contact lenses, they are usually fitted at that time. Follow the doctor’s recommendations such as:

  • Using eye drops after surgery that will help prevent infection, treat inflammation, and help with healing.
  • Wash your hands well before and after using the eye drops and touching your eye.
  • Avoid getting soap or water directly into the eye.
  • Do not rub or put pressure on the eye.
  • Your ophthalmologist may ask you to wear glasses or an eye shield.
  • You will need to wear an eye shield while you sleep.
  • Your ophthalmologist will tell you when you can be active again and at what level immediately after surgery.
  • It will tell you when you can safely resume exercising, driving, or other activities.

Results

Most people have a good prognosis and recover quickly from cataract surgery.

However, if you have other eye problems, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration, the surgery is likely to be more difficult or the outcome will not be as good.
